Shipping Live Plants in Winter Without Killing Them

Most plant losses in winter shipping are not frost. They are hours of chilling in the 40s, somewhere on the route the seller never saw.

Plants are the hardest thing on this list to ship, because they are alive, they cannot be repacked on arrival, and the damage often does not show for a week. A customer opens the box, everything looks fine, and five days later the leaves blacken and drop.

If you sell plants — cuttings, houseplants, succulents, bare-root stock — winter is when refund requests spike. Most of those losses are preventable, and most of them are not caused by what sellers think.

Freezing is not the threshold that matters

The instinct is to worry about 32°F. That is the wrong number for most plants.

Many tropical and subtropical houseplants suffer chilling injury well above freezing, starting somewhere in the 45 to 50°F range. The cell membranes are damaged without any ice forming at all. The plant looks fine when unboxed because the symptoms — blackened stems, mushy leaf bases, sudden collapse — take days to develop.

This is why a seller can look at tracking, see the package never went below 40°F, and still get a photo of a dead Monstera a week later. Nothing froze. It was chilled for eighteen hours, which was enough.

Duration matters as much as temperature

An hour at 40°F is survivable for nearly anything. Twenty hours at 40°F is not.

This is the part that makes route awareness so valuable for plants specifically. It is not enough to know the minimum temperature — you need to know how long the package sits near it. A ground shipment spending three nights in transit accumulates far more chilling exposure than an overnight shipment that dips lower but only once.

Buy speed before you buy packaging

Sellers reliably over-invest in insulation and under-invest in transit time.

Insulation does not generate heat. It slows the rate at which the box reaches ambient temperature. In a 25°F trailer, an insulated box eventually reaches 25°F — insulation only decides whether that takes six hours or eighteen. Over three nights, insulation alone always loses.

Two-day or overnight service cuts the exposure window in half or better. For plants, that is usually a bigger improvement than any packaging change you can make, and it is often cheaper than the replacement plant plus return shipping plus the support conversation.

Heat packs, used correctly

A 72-hour heat pack is the standard tool, and the standard mistakes are worth avoiding:

Never let the pack touch the plant. Direct contact cooks foliage. Wrap the pack, and put insulation or paper between it and anything green.

Heat packs need oxygen. Most are air-activated iron oxidation. Sealed inside an airtight plastic bag, they stop working. They need a breathable barrier.

Match the duration to the real transit time, not the quoted one. A 40-hour pack on a shipment that takes three days leaves the plant unprotected for the coldest part of the trip. Buy for longer than you expect to need.

They warm, they do not heat. A heat pack raises the interior a modest amount. It is not a substitute for choosing a faster service on a genuinely cold route.

Check the route, not the two cities

Because carriers route through hub-and-spoke networks, your package’s path frequently includes cities nowhere near the straight line between origin and destination. A shipment from Los Angeles to Dallas can pass through a hub considerably colder than either city, at 3am, for several hours. Neither the origin forecast nor the destination forecast shows this.

For plants, where the damage threshold is around 50°F rather than 32°F, this matters far more than it does for most goods, because the range of routes that can hurt you is much wider. Plenty of winter routes never drop below freezing anywhere and still sit in the 40s for most of a day.

Set a shipping policy and hold to it

  3. Hold orders during cold snaps and tell customers why. Most people would rather wait than receive a dead plant.
